The Battle of Goose Green
| Listen and Download FREE |
I joined the British army when I was just eighteen
So proud to wear that uniform a soldier of the queen
Twas the year of 1982 we sailed from Portsmouth quay
We were heading for the Falkland isles to set our people free
But we little knew what lay in store at the battle for goose green
My sweetheart was a Hampshire lass the prettiest girl I'd seen
She swore that she would wait for me a soldiers wife she'd be
We pledged our love to god above for all eternity
Midst all the flags and cheering but our love could never be For a
cruel fate awaited me at the battle for goose green
When President Galtieri invaded the Falklands green
He gave that iron lady her opportunity
We'll raise the flag and the battle cry fight on til' victory
But it wasn’t they who had to die at the hands of savagery
It was they who started this misery at the battle for goose green
When the carnage it was ended and Britannia ruled the waves
They gathered up the dead ones and dug a massive grave
They buried them all together the cost of liberty
Victims of a senseless war and mindless lunacy
And I Was Left just half a man at the battle for goose green
The maimed the burned the wounded they shipped us all back home
I got a nice new wheelchair to cart my shattered bones
And now I'm 42 years old how many more to go
My body's twisted and paralysed I feel so bloody low
What the hell were we all fighting for at the battle for goose green
A curse on politicians games and the battle of goose green
nothing gained if nothing learned from the battle for goose green
I joined the British Army
I joined the British Army
I joined the British Army
About 'The Battle of Goose Green'
I was twenty five years old when the Argentine government decided to 'liberate' the 'Malvinas'. At the time I was married and working hard to provide for my family. I'd already decided that whatever happened with the Falklands crisis, that if it got out of hand, I would NOT be either volunteering my services for the army, nor would I accept being called up for it. Defence of ones homeland was one thing, but travelling to the foot of South America to defend a somewhat dubious claim of 'British Sovereignty' was another ballgame. Maggie and many others of course saw things differently. This was an invasion of 'British territory' and the Falkland Isles MUST be 'liberated' from the 'Argies', which typifies, as the old saying goes, 'One mans meat is another mans poison'. The rest, as they also say is history! Like all wars there was an element of futility and perhaps a few hidden agendas involved with both sides. One thing's for sure, a lot of young men died bravely and many with great gallantry on the field of battle, fighting for ideals which many of them (on both sides) genuinely believed in. Needlessly? I'll let the historians deliberate on that one. In 2008 there are still a lot of people who still carry and bear the scars. I respectfully dedicate this song to all of those who took part. I must confess that when the conflict began I had some notion in my head that the Islands were somewhere off the coast of Scotland!
